MAGISTRATE'S COURT

FRIDAY (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) REMANDS -Alexander Hart, of Vogel street, a carpenter, 38 years of age, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting Ivy MacKenzie. He was remanded to appear on March 22. Mary McKegney, aged 61, a domestic, of Salisbury street, pleaded guilty to drunkenness, and not guilty to being a rogue and a vagabond. Accused had been twice convicted of drunkenness in the last six months. Sub-Inspector D. A. Mac Lean said that several social workers were deeply interested in the accused's welfare. The best thing for her would be to place her in a homo for two years. The accused was remanded for a week on each charge. PROBATION GRANTED Thomas Edward Reeve, of- lioseberry street, a labourer, aged 19 (Mr D. W. Russell), appeared for sentence on a charge of receiving a gold watch valued at £s.knowing that it had been dishonestly obtained. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said the accused had received the watch from another youth who had stolen it. Accused sold it to a jeweller for ss. Reeve was placed on probation for 12 months, and was ordered to repay £5 by instalments. TRAFFIC BREACHES For breaches of traffic regulations the following were fined, each being ordered to pay costs: Cycling on footpath—Albert Porter, ss; Esther Winifred Young, ss. Failing to give way to tram-car— Lionel Cresswell, 10s. Cycling without a light—Herbert Martin Bla/.ey, ss; Nancy Earsham, 10s; Cecil William Franks, 15s; John Hector Matheson, 15s; Arthur O'Brien, ss: Earl Somerville, 15s. No driving license—John Stanley Scott, 10s.

Failing to give way to traffic from the right—William Angus Douglas. 10s.

Failing to report an accident—Arnold Ivan Hadfield, £l. Riding motor-cycle without lights— Roy Trevor Hoskings, ss. For not having a driving license Hoskings was fined another 5s and was ordered to pay costs. Driving in a dangerous manner— John Edmund Bird, £l.
