Nomura, a representative of a large Japanese textile manufacturing firm, who is on a six' weeks' tour of the Dominion, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. Sir Louis Barnett. of Dunedin. who has returned from the congress of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, at Melbourne, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington vesterday. Sir Louis will leave to-dav for Dunedin. Mr S. L. Partridge, manager in Christchurch of Sargood. Son. and Ewen, Ltd.. returned yesterday from a holiday trip to Australia. Mr Partridge has been away from Christchurch a month. At an official dinner given at Government House, the Governor -Gensral (Lord Bledisloe) presented to Sir James Grose, the Royal letters patent connected with the bestowal of the honour of Knight Bachelor by the King last year.—Press Association. MacFarlane, draughtsman at the Christchurch Gas Company, Ltd., has received advice that he was successful in passing the examination held last December for associate membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (London). At a meeting of creditors of Quill, Morris, Ltd., held on Wednesday, reference was made by the chairman, Mr D. E. Wanklyn. to the absence of.Mr H. J. Otiey who, whilst in Hawke's Bay on business for the Hospital Board, was taken suddenly ill. Good wishes for a speedy and complete recovery were expressed by Mr A. S. Duncan and endorsed by the meeting. Latest news is that Mr Otiey's health has considerably improved. Senior-Sergeant D. L. Cahvell, who was previously stationed at the Taranaki Street Police Station, Wellington, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning to take the place of Senior-Sergeant J. Fox, who had been transferred to Auckland, at Christchurch District Headquarters. Senior-Sergeant Calwell will take up his duties within the next few days. The Professorial Board of the University of Otago decided last night to recommend to the University Council that the Sir Robert Stout Scholarship in economics should be awarded to Mr W. T. Doig, who took part of his lectures in Christchurch and the remainder here. The value of the scholarship is £SO a year for two years, and economic research is entailed.— Press Association. The High School Old Boys' Football Club at the annual meeting last evening, decided to write to Mr F. C. Forsyth, for about seven years a coach to the club, thanking him for his services. "Mr Forsyth has sacrificed a great deal of his time in the interests of the club," .said the chairman (Mr W. C. Dalley), "and he certainly deserves a mark of our appreciation." Mr W. H. Dixon, formerly conductor of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society, returned from England by the Rangitane. which arrived at Wellington yesterday. He resigned his position on his return from judging at the Ballarat competitions in 1933. He went to England and spent a good deal of time in Germany and other parts of the Continent; but decided to return to New Zealand. It is understood that he intends to settle in Auckland.— Press Association. Constable P. J. O'Gorman, who has been officer in charge of the Arms Office of the Christchurch Police Station for several years, left last evening to take charge of the Avondale Police Station, Auckland. On Wednesday evening. Constable O'Gorman was met by his fellowconstables, and was presented with a leather suitcase, and a tobacco pouch. The presentation was made by Constable P. Phillips, who referred to the good qualities of Constable O'Gorman, and on behalf of the staff expressed good wishes for his future. however, were being investigated. Mr R. Semple (Lab., Wellington East) said that the Miners' Appeal Board was a fiasco. On occasions it appeared to look for some miserable technicality to refuse an application. If miners' disease led to some other disability not directly traceable to mine labour, the pension should not be refused. Radio and Gramophone The attitude of certain gramophone record manufacturing companies toward B broadcasting stations was commented on by Mr A. E. Ansell (C, Chalmers) during the committee debate on the Broadcasting Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives to-night. Mr Ansell said that a certain company ] was trying to prevent the broaa--1 casting of its records from B sta- ; tions, and had refused to negotiate with the stations for the use of the ■ records. An arrangement had been made between the Broadcasting ; Board and the gramophone com- ; panies for permission to broadcast • records, and he asked if that ari rangement could be extended to include B stations.
