RAVAGES OF DEER
TO THE EDITOB OT XII K ntKS.I. ; Sir, —I vcad with interest "The Press" report of the Legislative CounI cil's unanimous agreement to urge the Government to take steps to exter- > minate wild deer, in order to save • native forests from destruction. Maj ; I ask, if, as is stated, the back counl try runholders realise the seriousness . of this menace, why it is so difficult tc I obtain permission to shoot deer on the back country stations? 5 Out of 10 cases, one meets wit! ; nine blank refusals, and perhaps on< : reluctant consent. Ihave discussed thi: * problem with several enthusiastic [ stalkers, and their experience has beer « similar to mine. Perhaps one of these farmers who are being so harassec
ference is there between food given charitably or money charitably? The unemployed have got this all wrong. Decent citizens don't like anyone to go short of the necessaries of life; but they will not stand revolutionary songs being sung and the red flag being carried round in front of processions. It is turning away people from helping them.
I would advise the unemployed to : get rid of their politically ambitious T leaders, tear up their banners, burn their flags, and not to try to force c r themselves on peace-loving citizens by - threats. They would get much more. 1 —Yours, etc., SEMPER VIRET. < March 14, 1935. 1
