Sir,— Everyone will sympathise with "Wealth Wasting" in her anxiety to see a better provision made for the distressed and unfortunate members of the community; but the mere issuing of more money alone will not Quite solve. the problem. Even granting that the Government should issue its : own money instead of getting the ; banks to issue it on Government security, there is still the fact that more and more would have to be issued until inflation and high prices set in, not to speak of the tendency fpr money to disappear continually into profits—a discovery that was made long before Major Douglas was heard of. I would not mention these commonplaces if it were not that so many people still . think that more money is all that is needed. Now the Welfare League has recently said that there is enough money in New Zealand to carry on all the requirements of business and has also mentioned the need for circulation of money. These statements are worthy ■ of a little attention; for a good deal „ depends on how money circulates. , A given quantity of money will aid ' in the production and distribution of 1 goods more efficiently if it circulates - rapidly. In other words, if we have " less money we must work it harder. 1 The present money system is by no - means perfect; but, bad as it is, we s might make better use of it.
