ARRESTED IN AMERICA

o British Author Said To Be Communist IMMIGRATION LAWS INVOKED (UNITED PRZSS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TEL.EfIttA.rH COPYRIGHT.) (Received March 13, 7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 12. The Government has ordered the . arrest of Mr Evelyn John Strachey. the British author, claiming that he '. entered the United States by means ' of false and misleading statements, and that since he arrived he had declared himself to be a communist. The Federal Bureau of Immigration announced that the circumstances mentioned rendered Mr Strachey mandatorily deportable under the immigration laws. Because of the prominence of Mr Strachey, many observers here consider that the projected action might grow into an international incident. Colonel D. W. MacCormack, Immigration Commissioner, announced that a warrant has been issued, and that his Chicago agents planned to serve : t on Mr Strachey at the town where he was scheduled to lecture. Later advice from Chicago states that Mr Strachey has been arrested there. He was released without a bond, and will appear before the immigration authorities on Wednesday. fMr Strachev is a former Labour member of the British House of Commons. His publications include "Revolution by Reason." "The Coming Struggle for Power," "The Menace of Fascism." and "The Nature of the Capitalist Crisis."! "CHARGE ABSURD" STRACHEY EXPLAINS HIS POSITION (Received March 13, 8.15 p.m.) CHICAGO, March 12. In a statement to the Associated Press, Mr Strachey said: "The charge as read to me in the warrant is absurd. I am not a member of the Communist party. Therefore I will firmly deny that 1 entered the country through misstatements. "I have nevei advocated the overthrow of the United States Government by force or violence I have never advocated anything. All the political talking 1 do I do in my own country, Britain. Here, American citizens invite me to lecture on the politics and econom.es of the day I from an informative standpoint, not from that of my political beliefs."'..
