RETIREMENT OF HEADMASTER
MR W. J. GLANVILLE, OF DARFIELD FAREWELL CEREMONY There was a large gathering in the Darfield Memorial Hall on Friday evening lo say good-bye to Mr and Mrs W. J. Glanville, who have been residents of Darfield for the last 10 years. Mr Glanville, who has been headmaster at the lecal school, retired irom that position on Thursday of last week, having completed 51 years service with the Education Department, during which period he has only had four days absence on sick leave. Mr S. T-t. Oldridge (chairman of the school committee) presided, and expressed regret at the departure of the guests of the evening. Representatives of various organnations were present, and also paid tribute to the departing guests. Mr C. S. Thompson (chairman of the Canterbury Education Board) *-poke of the service of Mr Glanville
;;nd expressed the board's appreciation of his work in the various schools m which he had been teaching. Messrs G. Cridge. jun.. and A. G. Holland (former chairmen of the local rchool committee) also expressed regret at the departure of Mr and Mrs Glanville and wished them a pleasant end happy time in their retirement. Mr L. A. Marshall, of Glentunnel < president of the Malvern Teachers' Discussion Circle) made reference to Mr GlanviUe's work on behalf of that body and complimented him on his splendid record and on his decision to retire while he and Mrs Glanville enjoyed their health. He wished them many years of retirement. On behalf of the women's organisations of the district, Mrs D. McMillan made appreciative reference to the work of Mrs Glanville on the various bodies on which she had terved. The Rev. A. S. Moffatt (Anglican) and the Rev. T. Paterson (Presbyterian) made reference to the manner in. which Mr Glanville had assisted them with the religious instruction in the school, and thanked him for his interest and sympathetic consideration. Mr Oldridge, on behalf of the parents and residents, presented Mr end Mrs Glanville with a well filled wallet of notes, and expressed the hope that they would spend many happy years together in their retirement. Mr J. A. Cridge, on behalf of the old pupils, presented Mr Glanville with a case of pipes. Mrs Glanville received a beautiful bouquet from Miss M. Warren, one of the present day school pupils. In rising to reply, Mr Glanville was received with acclamation. He said that he appreciated the kind remarks of the speakers, but considered he did not deserve them, as he had only done his duty. He thought it was only right that he should retire in favour of a younger man. He said he regretted very much leaving Darfield, as he- had enjoyed his stay in the district. On behalf of Mrs Glanville and himself he thanked them one end all for their gifts and good wishes. During the evening dancing was enjoyed to music played by the Kimberley Melody Players. Messrs R. Oldridge and G. Carter were masters of ceremonies. Items were given by Misses V. Register and G. Oldridge 'piano duets), Muriel Cridge (solos), Miss J. Redfern (violin soles), Mrs R. M. Gibb (solos), Miss H. Cullen (monologue), and Mr H. H. Barrs (songs*. Mrs J. H. Jarman was the accompanist. Mr and Mrs Glanville left for Timaru on Saturday morning, v.-here they will reside in future.
