SERIOUS CHARGES
A YOUNG MAN SENTENCED (PaESS ASSOCIATION TELSOBAM.) AUCKLAND. February 20. In spite of a number of testimonials as to the prisoner's previous good character, and counsel's plea that he had led a clean life until he became influenced by two other men who were living on an adjoining farm, Mr Justice Herdman to-day refused to grant probation to John Russell, aged 22 years, who had admitted three charges of unlawful carnal knowledge, and also a charge of procuring a drug for an illegal purpose. His Honour said he could not grant probation in such cases. If he granted it in this case, he would have to give it to other young men who interfered with young girls and their liberty. The prisoner had become associated with two other men at Hukatere, near Dargaville, and they became known as the "Three Musketeers." From a police report it appeared that, assisted by older girls, they had made some arrangement to introduce young girls to immoral practices. The other two men had been sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. Russell, in view of hi? previous good character, would be sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
