ADVANCE HANMER
TO THE EDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Seeing that the Prime Minister had lately visited Hanmer to enquire into the improvements requested by the Hanmer Progress League and others to the Government baths, etc., I made my first visit a few days ago to this much-talked-of holiday resort, and after spending a week there I have come away feeling that the Government is being asked too much bv the league and others, who should first put their own house in order, before asking the Government to spend money on improving the baths, etc. To my mind, Hanmer is without doubt, the dirtiest holiday resort in the Dominion. What the Hanmer Progress League is doing to make its town more popular I cannot see. The streets are littered with rubbish, and the parks likewise, old paper, etc., being allowed to lie or blow about at will, in front of the main shop. The rubbish allowed to pile up in the gutter is a disgrace; in fact, the whole town looks dirty and neglected. What a striking contrast when one walks through the hospital grounds. Here the well-kept lawns and gardens are a real treat, and a credit to the Government. If the Hanmer Progress League would commence to clean up its own backyard, and try, by making the town spick and span before asking the Government to spend money on an already well-managed and quite efficient baths, etc., I am sure more visitors would be attracted to the place. What are the residents doing to assist themselves in this direction? Let the tradespeople get together and make up their minds to get the town a? clean and well-kept as the hospital grounds, and they will find that visitors will come in increasing numbers; but every resident will have to take a part in it, otherwise Hanmer will surely become a one-man town, if it is not so already.—Yours, etc., GREEN GLASSES.
