GRASS BURNED AT CLANDEBOYE

♦ FIRE CHECKED AFTER HARD FIGHT Thousands of acres of grassland in the Clandeboye and Orton district were threatened on Tuesday, when a fire, the first in the Clandeboye district for some time, broke out in a gorse hedge on the property of Mr B. Morrison. Fanned by a light southerly wind, the fire quickly spread and more than a mile of fence line and several acres of grass were destroyed. Forty volunteers hurried to the assistance of Mr Morrison, and after three hours' work with sacks and the use of a threshing mill water-cart the Are was brought under control. A change of the wind to the north-west assisted the fire-fighters.

Tobacco is said to have been rattoi duced into China from Luzon, Phili?.pines, in 1530. The Chinese became so excessively fond of it that'the last Ming emperor forbade its use;; .<;,.,:■;
