LIFE-SAYING

Rescue and Release The fifth method of rescue is used only when the person being assisted is passive. The rescuer holds the subject with one arm, which is placed over the other person's shoulder and across his chest, the arm gripping under the opposite armpit or by fhe clothes, thus leaving the rescuer with one arm free with which to propel himself. It is frequently necessary to deal with a person who is struggling. Such a person can be dangerous, and it is essential to know how to release oneself from his grip if he should in his frenzy clutch one. Three methods are recommended. If the rescuer is grasped by the wrists, he must straighten both arms, and bring them down together. At the hip level he must force them against the drowning person's thumbs as he brings his arms at right angles to his own body. This will dislocate the thumbs of the drowning person it the clutch has not previously been broken. The methods of releasing oneself it held by the neck or round the body and arms will be dealt with later.
