NOTES ON THE RACING [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, February 20. Some really good racing was witnessed at Epsom to-day, when the track was much faster than on Saturday, and smart times were recorded. Impromptu, better suited by the conditions, won the chief race in his best style, while Nimbus won the Lydney Park Handicap. A Close Finish Audo Patch was favourite for the Manurewa Handicap, but he was beaten half a head by the first day's winner, Mute. Audo Patch was very slow away, while Mute began very smartly, and was in behind the favourite at the end of two furlongs. Meadow King broke badly at the start, but going fast, was handy at the stands, when he again broke. Mute ran past Audo Patch when the straight was entered, but the latter made a game effort to meet with a narrow defeat. Young Rodney was four lengths away third. Proletarian Beaten Proletarian, the favourite for the Howick Handicap, got the best of the start, being followed by Ariel Bell, Kia Kaha, and Winaway, with the others tangling. Proletarian maintained the lead for a mile and a quarter, when he skipped and Winaway, who had taken second place down the back, dashed to the front. The favourite made an effort in the straight, but could make no impression on Winaway, who won by three lengths. Kia Kaha, who showed a lot of speed in patches, was the same distance away third, followed by Charteris Bay, Ariel Bell, and Muriel Bond. The winner went 3min 24 3-ssec from a 3min 43sec mark. Impromptu Improves Impromptu registered a fine performance in winning the Bledisloe Handicap, taking charge at the end of nine furlongs and giving the others no chance at the finish. The race was run at a solid clip. Willie Derby led for a mile in 2min 14sec, with Impromptu, who went fast in the early part, close up to him, and Raydus handy. Impromptu hit the front shortly afterwards, and led down the back from Willie Derby and Raydus, with Pegaway heading the others. Crossing the top Kewpie's Guy ran up on the outside, with Willie Derby. At the home turn Impromptu was going well in front, and he hung on to win by a length from Willie Derby, who beat Kewpie's Guy by a head. Then came Raydus, Pegaway, Jewel Pointer, and Auto Machine. Worthy Light was the only scratching. A Good Favourite Plain Pearl was backed with the greatest confidence in the Sylvia Park Handicap, and she won in no uncertain
manner. Te Mahanga led for half a mile, where Edna Worthy made a forward move. Berkett then went to the front with Plain Pearl, and clapped on the pace, being followed closely along the back by Edna Worthy and Homeward. Plain Pearl turned for home ahead of Edna Worthy and Homeward, but the latter was stopping. Edna ' Worthy challenged the leader, but had no chance, Plain Pearl winning with comfort. Homeward battled into third place with Guid Hairst at the head of a well beaten lot. Plain Pearl ran 3min 23sec without being fully extended, and she is as good as her West Coast form suggested. Spirited Betting Spirited betting on the Richmond Handicap saw Gold Dredge first choice on the one-two machine, while Smith's bracket, Rayon d'Or-Rarc Rey, displaced her on the place totalisator. Rayon d'Or began well to take the lead from Lucky Love and Min Bells, while Aircraft and Rare Rey lost some ground. With six furlongs covered Rayon d'Or was showing the way to Min Bells, Le Chenault, . and Gold Dredge, and down the back the lastnamed went up fast to be second into the straight. She made a gallant effort, and although she ran 3min 21 3-ssec could not beat Rayon d'Or, who paced smoothly all the way. With a late run Fisher got into third place just in front of Rare Rey with Le Chenault, Tryment, and Min Bells following. Lucky Love, when going well, damaged his sulky and was pulled up. Golden Eagle Wins Rustle was made a better favourite than Golden Eagle for the Forbes Handicap, but while the latter won, the favourite, after trotting a fine race, was only third. Mute, penalised 24 yards, was the early leader, and with a round gone was just in front of Manna's Son, Rustle, Gala Day, and Golden Eagle. Along the back Gala Day ran up to Mute, and Golden Eagle was on the outside of Rustle, who could not get a run. Mute broke at the home turn, leaving Gala Day in charge from Golden Eagle "and Rustle, who had to pull to the outer. In a hard finish Golden Eagle beat Gala Day by ahead with Rustle a good third just in front of Manna's Son. Backers Astray There was a surprise in the Lydney Handicap when Nimbus beat one of the favourites, Travis, by a narrow margin to pay double figures. When the field settled down Travis led from Homeward, Nimbus, Pukemiro, Realty, and Francis Lincoln, with Chancellor heading the remainder. Along the back Nimbus ran past Homeward, but had not reached Travis as they made the last turn, where this pair, with Homeward and Francis Lincoln, were the only ones with a chance. Travis hung on gamely, but Nimbus wore him down to win by a head, with Home-' ward a length back third, and Francis Lincoln a head away fourth. Then came Jackie Thorpe, Kewpie's Guy, Realty, and Pukemiro. Bingen Chief broke badly at the start and was last all the way. A Useful Pacer Having his first race for F. J. Smith. King's Warrior, patiently driven, came through at the end of the Farewell Handicap to win nicely, but had Bonnie Direct not lost 70 yards at the start she would have made the finish more interesting. Min Bells piloted the field from the favourite, with Mazda and Social Pest, who began smartly, handy. Along the back Social Pest made a sharp move to have charge crossing the top from Min Bells. King's Warrior, and Kewpie's Bond. The last-named entered the straight first, but King's Warrior beat her home, while Bonnie Direct, who finished well, was third, followed by Social Pest and Min Bells. Parrish Belle broke at the start and was never dangerous. VINTAGE AND GOLD TRAIL EXERCISED AT RANDWICK (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BI ELECTWO TELEGBAFH —COPYBIGHT.)
