* GREYMOUTH BUILDING ACTIVITY (SrECIAL TO THE FHESS.> GREYMOUTH, February 20. During last year building permits of a total value of £26,373 5s were issued by the Greymouth Borough Council, a. slight increase over the previous year, when the total was £25,744 7s. In 1932 the value of permits issued was £18,671 ss. Scenery Preservation Under the auspices of the Greymouth branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association, a committee has been set up for the purpose of preserving, as far as possible, the natural bush and bird life of Westland. At a recent special meeting of the committee Mr E. L. Kehoe was added Id the executive. On the motion of Dr. W. McKay and Mr W. F. Harley, Mr Kehoe was appointed secretary of. the Scenic Protection Committee for the current year. It was decided that the Westland Progress League be asked to co-operate in a stand against the threatened sacrifice of a magnificent stretch of roadside bush in South Westland. Cricket Association Mr F. H. Denton presided over a full attendance at this week's meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Cricket Association. The protest from the Cobden Club against Marist interchanging players from their A and B teams was dismissed. It was decided that the dates suggested for the match at Ashburton, March 16 and 18, were acceptable, and the representative team is to be selected before March 4. It was decided that a letter be sent to the Canterbury Association congratulating them on the high standard of play of their team in the recent match. It was decided that no more fixtures be arranged for the Star Club. Fixtures were drawn up as follows for next Sunday: A grade: Marist v. United at Rec. 1; Cobden v. Runanga. at Cobden; B grade: Cobden v. Camerons. at Camerons; Marist v. Kumara, at Rec. 2. Greymouth Fire Brigade The Greymouth Fire Brigade team to attend the New Zealand demonstration in Blenheim has been selected as follows:—Foreman Reynolds, Motormen Malloy and Grant, Firemen McEnaney and Scott; delegate to conference, Foreman G. Nelson. The team will leave on Saturday morning. De-puty-Superintendent A. White and Past-President J. Walton have been appointed officials for the demonstration. Bus Accident Falling out of the door of the Blaketown bus yesterday morning, while on their way to school, Ann de Goldi, aged 11, and Julia de Goldi, aged 10, of Blaketown, suffered head injuries and shock. They were attended by Dr. W. A. Bird and admitted to the Grey Hospital. Their condition is not serious. Otira Tunnel Freight Last week 10,520 tons of freight were hauled through the Otira tunnel, from Westland to Canterbury, as compared with 8888 tons in the corresponding week last year and 8608 tons in 1933. Residential Area South Peach is becoming increasingly popular for residential sites. Several new dwellings have been erected there since the New Year, and six others are to be started at an early date. Personal The funeral of Mr Gordon Grey Wylde took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. Hamilton (Kumara), assisted by the Rev. E. D. Marks. Pupils of the Greymouth Technical College, of which Mr Wylde was a former pupil and prefect, stood at attention as the funeral procession passed. The funeral of Mr Thomas Henry Naisbett, of Runanga, took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. H. R. Fell. Mr J. S. Robertson left yesterday for Timaru. Mr C. Fraser, jun., left yesterday on return to Christchurch. Mrs A. E. Prince returned yesterday from Christchurch. Miss E. Lees left yesterday for Christchurch.

Mrs Martin, of Wellington, is on a I visit to her daughter, Mrs L. Stevens. Cadets in Camp The Reefton Cadet Unit has gone into camp at Mai Mai. The camp is in the charge of Sergeant-Major Jordan and Mr Haigh. Mail Bag Ransacked The private mail bag, belonging to Mr H. Betts, of Oweka, was ransacked this week. The bag was placed in its usual place on the side of the road, but on arrival at the post office it was found to be split open and the letters missing. There was a small sum of money in the letters, and the matter has been placed in the hands of the police. Magislrale':> Court A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held before Mr H. Morgan, S.M, Judgment for plaintiff by default was given i7i the following civil cases:—J. W. Chalk v. T. Southon, £5 17s sd; J. McElwee and Sons v. R. Naylor, £3 17s 6d. The Inangahua Hospital Board proceeded against R. E. Gilroy, on a judgment summons for *£s 14s. Defendant was ordered to pay a total of £7 lis 6d within 14 days, in default seven days' imprisonment. John William Griggs was admitted to probation for 12 months, on a charge of theft of a container and a film, valued at £SO. the property of the British Empire Films, Ltd. William Allan Dowie and another were jointly charged with the theft of a battery, the property of Joseph Ralston Jones. Dowie was fined £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment. The case against the other accused was referred to the Children's Court. William James Provis, Thos. Vane Southon, and Lionel Thomas Bremner
were charged with the theft of a steer, valued at £6 10s, the property of Arthur Wallace Bell. • Accused were fined £5 each, in default one month's imprisonment with hard labour. Swimming At a meeting of the committee of the Reefton Swimming Club, it was decided to hold a further carnival on February 21, and also to instruct the selectors to proceed with the selection of the team to challenge for the John
