GAMING CHARGES
RAIDS ON DUNEDIN HOTELS (PRESS ASSOCIATION TBUSOEAM.i- ; j DUNEDIN, Februarys 15. The hearing of betting charges arising from raids by police on several hotels early in the afternoon of January 26, a day on which there was considerable racing throughout the Dominion, was commenced before Mr H, W. Bundle, S.M.; in the Magistrate's Court this morning. The first charges taken were two against Mabel Quirk, wife of the licensee of the St. Kilda Hotel, of using the kitchen of the hotel as a common gaming-house. Robert Peddar Crawford, a barman, was charged on two counts with using the bar of this hotel as a common gaming-house, and Martin Quirk, licensee, with using his premises as a common gaming-house, and also permitting them to be used for such a purpose. Evidence was given by Clara Eden, p6lice matron, and Constable Cumming, as to several bets made with Mabel Quirk,, and with, the barman, Crawford. After evidence for the prosecution had been concluded the hearing was adjourned sine die.
