NAVY LEAGUE
* GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the general committee of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League was held last evening. Canon A. H. Norris was in the chair. The financial statement showed that there was a considerable drop in the credit balance from December 12. At that date £7O 6s 9d was in hand, but the credit balance at February 13 was only £33 5s Id. Excess of receipts over payments for the Navy League ball on January 17 was £1 10s lOd. Withdrawals from the bank amounted to £65. The majn items of expenditure were the annual payment to the London branch of £37 16s 3d and office salaries for two months, £37 10s. A letter from Captain W. S. F. Macleod, of H.M.A.S. Australia, expressing thanks for what had been done to entertain the ship's company while in Lyttelton by the Navy League, was received. A circular was received from the head office in London setting forth the policy of the league. In the circular it was stated that the league considered it to be its duty to call the atention of the public to the grave position of British shipping.
