ATHLETICS

__— 4 _— AMATEUR CENTRE MEETS CANTERBURY-WELLINGTON FIXTURE CANCELLED Because of difficulty over dates and the probability that several Canterbury athletes might not be available to go to Wellington,, the CanterburyWellington athletic fixture has been cancelled for this season. The executive of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre, at a meeting last evening, adopted a suggestion from Wellington that the meeting should not be held, but that the series be resumed early next season. Mr J. K. Moloney presided at the meeting, and there were also present Messrs W. C. Flewellyn. R. Beattie, L. iH. Hill, M. Leadbetter, C. N. Hamilton, E. M. Todd, J. A. Gasson, A. I. Hughes. The interprovincial fixture was to have been held on February 2 at Wellington, but was postponed because of a difficulty over dates. The centre at its meeting last evening received a, letter from the Wellington centre stating that it could obtain the use of Basin Reserve on only two more Saturdays this season, and these were already appointed for important meetings. Because of this and because of the likelihood of Canterbury's leading athletes no? being able to travel to Wellington it was suggested that the Canterbury-Wellington fixture should not be held this year, but that a Canterbury team should go to Wellington early next'season. The Wellington Centre's suggestion was accepted. Remits for Conference Remits for submission to the annual conference of delegates from, all centres, to be held in Wanganui on March 8, were drawn up as follows: (1) That steps be taken to establish Australia v. New Zealand contests, the first to be. held next season in New Zealand—one party of tralian athletes to be invited to tour the South Island and the other the North Island, meeting in Wellington for the international fixture. (2) That entry fees for New Zealand championship events should be reduced from 2s 6d to Is. (3) That the New Zealand championship meetings should be held alternately in the South and North Islands. ' (4) That the constitution of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association be overhauled to give centres direct voting powers in the election for official positions on the council, and that delegates from centres, together with, resident delegates, meet in Wellington to elect office-bearers. On the motion of Mr Flewellyn it was decided to congratulate the New Zealand athletes on their success in Melbourne, and also to congratulate the selectors. Visiting Athletes The New Zealand council advised that the British and Finnish athletes would arive in Christchurch on Sunday, February 28, by the steamer express, and would spend the day in the city before leaving by the night express for Dunedin; they would return to Christchurch on Thursday evening, February 28, compete here ori March 2, and remain here on March 3 and March 4, leaving for the north on the evening of March 4. The Waimate Amateur Athletic Club was granted permission to hold an open meeting on Easter Saturday. The New Zealand council advised that E. T. M. Young, of the Technical Club, had been reinstated. The Marshland Sports Club's programme for its meeting on March 9 was approved, subject to the recommendation that entry fee for open events be reduced to Is.
