GRASS FIRE IN HAGLEY PARK

Shortly after 2 o'clock yesterdayafternoon -a fire started in the dry grass on the top of a terrace in the football grounds in North Hagley Park, and, driven by a fairly strong easterly wind, travelled through the grass towards Deans avenue. The foreman of the garden staff, Mr F. Thorne, noticed the blaze, and summoned about 15 of his men, who, armed with beaters, hurried to the fire. Concentrating on the sides of the burning area, they succeeded in preventing the fire from gaining a hold, and, by the time the brigade arrived, scarcely a quarter of an hour' later, had the outbreak completely under control. Practically no damage was done, an area of about 100 * yards by 200 yards only being blackened.
