At Wembley, Walter Neusel beat Petersen in the eleventh round. The opening rounds were very fast. Both men fought like furies, taking punishment in an endeavour to score with a decisive blow. Neusel was by far the more effective. Petersen, in spite of gallant efforts, failed to keep the German at long range, and was rocked by punch after punch until he was on the verge of falling when the towel was thrown in. It was a tragic fight for Petersen, who hoped that victory would enable him to meet Hamas as a preliminary to a fight with Max Baer. Petersen said he lost because he was blinded with blood.
