The secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Royal Life Saving Society was instructed last night to forward a letter of congratulation to Mr J. Bailey, who will be married on February 11 to Miss Beryl Buxton, an examiner and a former member of the committee.

Mr G. Lawn, lecturer in economies at Canterbury University College, returned yesterday from' a holiday at Lake Rotoroa. Mr Lawn was accompanied by Mrs Lawn, and, for part of the time, by Dr. and Mrs J. B. Condliffe and their family. Professor Norman Collie, of London University, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and will leave for Mount Cook and the southern lake} to-morrow. Professor Collie, who is keenly interested in mountaineering, is a former president of the Royal Alpine Club. Public Service Superannuation Board appointments have been gazetted as follows:—Messrs J. H. Jerram, H. W. Mackintosh, and R. jSinel (representing departments [other than the Post and Telegraph I Department and the Police Force); |R. H. Browne and H. R. Following on the hanging of three of his pictures in the Royal Academy last year, the Auckland artist, Mr C. F. Goldie, is now finishing the last of three others for submission to the hanging committee this year. The pictures will be consigned by the Port Gisborne, which will sail from Auckland on Wednesday. Of the three that were sent last year, one was bought by Lady Bledisloe and another was sold in England. The third will be sent to the Paris Salon this season. At the committee meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Life Saving Society last night the secretary was instructed to send a letter of appreciation to Mr F. J. L. Scott, who for many years has been in charge of the life saving instruction at the New Brighton School. The secretary congratulated Mr Scott on his new position in the North Island. The new? of Mr H. C. Walker's appointment as aviation officer in New Zealand for the Vacuum Oil Company Pty., Ltd., will be wcil received in aviation circles. For the last 12 months this position has been held by Mr W. Machin, jun., in the dual capacity of New Zealand advertising manager and aviation officer, but in view of the likely early development of commercial aviation, and the progress of flying generally in the Dominion, the appointment of a full-time aviation officer is in line with the company's policy of assisting in the developj ment of aviation. Mr H. C. Walker I acted as co-pilot and navigator to Mr M. C. McGregor in tlie Melbourne Centenary air race, and is captain of the Manawatu Aero Club» He will take up his new duties today.
