LANCASTER PARK BOARD
+ APPLICATIONS FOK USE OF GROUND DISCUSSION ON SUNDAY CONCERTS At a meeting last evening the Lancaster Park Board of Control discussed the advisability of allowing frequent use of the park on Sundays. There was a good deaJ of opposition to any policy of throwing the ground open for general use on Sundays. Mr H. H. Wauchop presided, and there were also present Messrs R. Beattie, A. E. McPhail, J. K. Moloney, W. H. Winsor, W. L. King, G. E. King, and Dr. W. S. Seed. The board considered two applications for the use of the park on a Sunday—by the Municipal Band for a combined band concert on February 10, and the Woolston Band for a concert, with the Port Nicholson Band, on February 17. There was some discussion on the granting the use of the park at all on Sundays, several members contending that i£ the requests were granted there would be similar requests "from all torts of organisations. Mr Winsor suggested that if the park could be properly lighted the oval could be made available for evening meetings and concerts, these taking the place of Sunday functions. Mr Moloney supported the suggestion for lighting the park. Mr W. L. King suggested that all the bands should combine on February 17 and hold only the one concert. A motion had been moved that the applications be granted provided only a collection was taken up at the gates, and the bands paid cleaning-up expenses; but Mr King embodied his suggestion in an amendment. In the discussion the chairman said that he would be in favour of granting the bands a Sunday each on the park, if the requests were not to crop up repeatedly. On the other hand the Tjoard had to consider the people living near the park. The amendment was lost and the motion carried. International Athletics The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was granted the use of the park on the following dates:— February 22 and 23 (Canterbury championships); March 2, visit of British and Finnish athletes; March 12, Otago v. Canterbury, evening meeting. The use ol' the park was granted the association for February 9, provided there v.as no postponement of the cricket to that date. The Athletic Association also asked - for permission to broadcast the fixtures on February 22 and 23, and on March 2. It was decided to ask the association to secure details about fees *or the broadcasts and then approach the board again. A letter was received from the Institute Notre Dame des Missions, Ferry road, thanking the board for the use oi the park for a combined sports meeting.
