♦- GREYMOUTH PERSONAL ISrICIAX TO TBS FESSS.) GREYMOUTH, January SO. Miss E. Ellis returned yesterday to Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. R. Ford left yesterday for Invercargill. Mr and Mrs E. Rosewall returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs H. Herring and Miss M. Herring left yesterday for Wellington. Nurse L. Gilmer left to-day on return to Yarrawonga, New South Wales. Miss Francis Braidwood left yesterday for Christchurch, where her marriage to Mr E. Mitchell, of Stafford, will take place on Saturday. On Monday evening Miss Braidwood was tendered a gift evening by the nursing staff of the Grey Hospital, and an enjoyable time was spent. Miss Braidwood received many useful gifts. Miss N. Burns has left for Auckland on a holiday visit. Mr R. A. McSorily left yesterday for! Queenstown. j Mr J. P. Ward has left on return to Dunedin, accompanied by Mr Ber-1 nard Ward, of Arahura. Power Line Extensions In the near future the Grey Electric! Power Board will extend its lines to Waiuta and Barrytown. The Waiuta line will supply power to the township and the quartz mine, while at Barrytown the power will be used principally by gold dredges. The board is also making a short extension of its line to a sawmill, at Nelson Creek. Bowls The West Coast Bowling Centre has received record entries for the annual tournament, which will be held on the Greymouth and Runanga Club's greens, commencing on February 11. There are 32 full rinks nominated. District Coal Mines Liverpool, Wallsend, and Blackball mines will work throughout this week, whilst the James mine will remain j idle. Out of a possible 268 days, thej Blackball mine worked on 241 daysj last year. Unlike the other large district mines, Blackball works on tjie! back Saturday. While other mines are j feeling a depression through the cur-1 tailment of orders, especially during) summer months, Blackball coal has retained a ready market, and the employees have enjoyed at least an average of five days' work each week throughout last year, and the maximum time possible since resuming after the holidays. Cycling As a preliminary to the road raoe to be held at the Karoro sports meeting, the Greymouth Sports and Cycling Club held a race over the same course, from Karoro to Camerons and return, last evening. Six oil the 11 riders finished in a bunch, J. Daniels winning narrowly from D. Johnston, with D. Clark in third place. Fastest time was secured by L. Hogarth, who increased his margin from the scratch man, P. Duffy, from 45 seconds to 47 I seconds. Results:—J. Daniels (lmin)

Magistrate's Court A sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Greymouth was held before Mr H. Morgan, S.M. Richard Leech was fined £1 for using insulting language on the school reserve, Rapahoe, on December 19. Reginald Warwick Hart and Charles Stewart were each fined £1 10s for crossing railway lines with motor vehicles when the line was not clear. Stanley Rich Wylde was fined 10s for carrying on an unlicensed goods service. John Darwell was ordered to pay 15s towards the maintenance of his parents. William Davies elected to be tried by a jury on a charge of using obscene language in Tainui street on January 1. He pleaded not guilty and was committed to the next sitting o£ the Supreme Court at Greymouth for trial. REEFTON I * PERSONAL (SPECIAL TO TH* FB*SS.) | REEFTON, Janiiary 30. Mrs G. N. Orsbourn and Miss I. Kearns have returned from a holiday in Christchurch. The Rev. W. Bell and Mrs Bell have returned from the south. School Excursion The annual school excursion of the Inangahua district will take place at Greymouth on Wednesday, February 6. The trains will arrive in Greymouth at 10.14 a.m., and will leave on return to Reefton at 6 p.m. Road Blocked Some inconvenience was caused to motorists when a loaded fruit lorry blocked all the traffic on the Buller road, north of the Larry's Creek bridge. A wheel on the lorry collapsed, and it was three hours before repairs could be carried ofrt.
