RETURNED SOLDIERS' SOCIAL

<■> CHRISTCHURCH ARTISTS ENTERTAINED As a mark of the appreciation of the assistance given by Christchurch artists in the concerns conducted by the Returned Soldiers' Association, they were entertained by the executive committee of the association at an informal function in the Jellicoe Hall last evening. There was a large attendance of members and of guests, and many toasts were honoured and items given. .The Rev. F. T. Read, president of the association, was in the chair, and associated with him were Mr H. Fleck, past president of the association, and Mr W. Gordon, president of the Kaiapoi Returned Soldiers' Association. Members of the executive committee present were Messrs A. W. Mewton, W. E. Leadley, J. S. Chisholm, B. O. Priddis, A. L. Emerson, C. Miln, C. Chisnall, and E. F. Willcox (secretary of the association).

Mr Read, in expressing the gratitude of the association to those who had assisted at the concerts on Thursday nights and at other times, both, in town and in the country, remarked that at the welcome to General Sir Alexander Godley distinguished visitors had spoken in high terms of the standard of playing of the orchestra and of the other items. The association owed a great debt to those Christchurch artists, said Mr Read, who had always been most willing to give their services, and it was felt that, although various resolutions of thanks had been passed from time to time during the year, it was desirable and fitting to thank them collectively. After the loyal toasts the following toasts were honoured:—"The Artists" (proposed by the chairman, and replied to by Messrs G. Young, D. McGill, and H. G. Glaysher); "The Newspapers," (proposed-by Mr J. S. Chisholm); "The Returned Soldiers' Association Executive" (proposed by Mr G. Russell, and replied to by Mr A. W. Mewton); "The Secretary" (proposed by Mr J. S. Chisholm, and replied to by Mr E. F. Willcox); "The Social Committee of the Returned Soldiers' Association" (proposed by Mr A. L. Emerson, and replied to by members ,of the committee); "M. L. Cummings" (proposed by Mr B. O. Priddis); "The Kaiapoi Returned Soldiers' Association" (proposed by Mr C. Miln, and replied to by the president, Mr W. Gordon). The following contributed items:— The orchestra, under Mr H. G. Glaysher; songs, Messrs L. Stewart, C. O'Hagan, G. Young, and D. McGill; humorous monologues, Messrs G. Titchener and J. Lockhart; duet, Messrs J. Smith and T. Shearer; humorous stories, Mr A. Owen; piano- | forte soli, Mr H. Goodland.
