MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON PERSONAL Mr Edward Taylor, of Natal, South Africa, and a former owner of Klondyke and Shepherd's Bush stations, near Ruapuna, is on a visit to New Zealand, and is staying at Ruapuna. The Rev. R. S. Watson and Mrs Watson have returned to Ashburton after being on annual holiday. Sister Mabel Jennings, of Chatham Islands, is on leave, and is staying with her parents at Ashburton. Major A. Hildreth, recently attached to the Salvation Army training college at Wellington, is on a visit to Ashburton, and is accompanied by Mrs Hildreth. About four years ago Major Hildreth was in charge of the Ashburton Salvation Army Corps. Last evening he was entertained at an informal social at the Salvation Army Hall, to give him an opportunity to meet his former associates. Major Hildreth has received notice of transfer to Auckland. The Rev. W. Marshall and Mrs Marshall have returned to Tinwald from a holiday at Sumner. Mr Harry Marsden, who has been manager of the Majestic Theatre since August, 1931, will leave on Monday to take over the management of the Prince Edward Theatre, Auckland: He will be succeeded by Mr Arihur Gordon, of the Strand Theatre, Dunedin, who arrived at Ashburton last evening. Cricket M. O'Reilly will replace B. McSherry, who is not available to play in the Ashburton senior representative cricket team against South Canterbury on Saturday.

County Council Elections There are approximately 3000 names on the Ashburton county electors' roll, which has been prepared and made available for inspection by electors until February 15 at convenient stores or road board offices in each riding. The roll will close on April 3 and the triennial elections for 12 county councillors, six representatives of the j Ashburton county on the Ashburton Hospital Board, eight representatives of the county on the Ashburton Power Board, and two representatives on the Lyttelton Harbour Board will be held in May. The Lyttelton Harbour Board members will represent the Ashburton borough, Tinwald Town Board, and Ashburton county. Under the plural voting system which is in force for county elections, occupiers of property with a capital value up to £IOOO have one vote, occupiers of property valued at oetween £lOOl and £2OOO have two votes, and those whose property has a capital value of £2OOI and upwards are entitled to three votes. Local bodies, societies, companies, or business firms who are entitled to vote are required to see that the name of the person deputed to record their vote is on the roll, otherwise a sealed authority will have to be produced on the day of the election before the vote will be accepted. Grass Fire The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade received a call yesterday to a grass fire which started in the Ashburton Borough Council's plantation behind the Ashburton County Council's works yard. Very little damage was done, the fire having been put out before the brigade arrived.' Tennis The following players will represent Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-As-sociation against South Canterbury at Ashburton on Saturday: J. D. Coward, P. McLauchlan, E. Bryant, V. W. Russell, A. Stanley, W. T. Watkins, Misses D. Vesty, E. Meredith, I. Dahlberg, T. Cowan, A. Amos, and N. Tayler. Because of the representative fixture on Saturday the intermediate competition matches set down for that date will be played on February 9. Bowls A friendly match was played between the Allenton and Ashburton Bowling Clubs at Allenton last evening, resulting in a win for Allenton by 113 points to 82 points.
