HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW

EXCELLENT ENTRIES * RECEIVED Notwithstanding the extraordinarily dry weather of the last few months, it ' is expected that there will be another splendid display at the annual gladiolus and show of the ' Canterbury Horticultural Society, which will open at the Durham Street Art Gallery today. Although not so large as the number of entries last year, approximately 600 have been received lor the show, and this is beyond all expectations. with the exception of gladioli and cut flowers, wmch have suffered severely in the dry weather, the entries are approximately me same as las* year, tne danna section being exceptionally strong. Entries have been received irom Bo competitors, approximately the same as last year, strong competition in tne giadioxus section is expected irom two competitors nom Gtago, who, after doing exceptionally wen in the National nower Show in Dunedin, have entered freely in the glatuoius ciasses, and are sending strong entries up to Christchurch. In addition to the competitive ciasses, two displays of dahlias ior exhibition only are being sent by Messrs A. J. Snaiier and Bon, taimerston North, and Mr J. Grainger, Timaru. The Canterbury Horticultural Society, said Mr H. L. Darton, the secretary, yesterday, was especially aiiected by growing conditions, tor, wnereas the entries in other snows were supplemented by domestic sections which were independent of season, nis society did not cater for home industries. He was confident of good attendances, however, as this show was the most Ireely patronised by the public of tne four shows that the society holds each year. Tne show, which will be continued to-morrow, will be officially opened at 3 p.m. by the president of the society, tne lion. Sir K. Heaton Rnodes, M.L.C. The whole of the display will be arranged this. morning, and the judging will commence at 11 o'clock.
