LEAP PROM TRAIN
POLICE SEARCH FOR MAN UNSUCCESSFULLY (PSBSB tSSOCUTto* TAURANGA, January 30. As the express train from Auckland to Taneatua was crossing the Wairoa river about four miles before reaching Tauranga, the passengers ' experienced a thrill at seeing a man leap from the train into the river. He is believed to be Herbert Maxfleld, about 25 years of age, who is wanted by the police. The man reached the shore near the Bethlehem native pa; later he was seen at Wairoa pa and OtumoetaL The police were advised and all night two constables searched the country districts and the town unsuccessfully. Maxfleld is wanted on charges of breaking and entering and theft at Tauranga about three years ago.' .It is believed he was deported from Aus-* tralia and came back to New Zealand "by the Marama on Monday. last Maxfield formerly lived.in Tauranga; he was declared an habitual criminal some years ago.
