Critics are blaming Wyatt for putting the West Indies in to bat, and also for sending in his weaker batsmen in the second innings when England was faced with a big total. "Wyatt explains that he put his opponents in first because a matting wicket remains the same throughout a match, and consequently there was 110 advantage in batting first. He adds that the batting order was altered with a view to taking the shine off the ball without risking valuable wickets If successful, this policy would nave enabled the team to go for the_runs; if unsuccessful, sounder batsmen would have been able to play out time, he expected. SOUTHLAND ABANDONS HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE (PBXBS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) PALMERSTON N., January 30. The Manawatu Cricket Association has been advised that Southland has been forced to abandon the Hawke Cup challenge. A guarantee of £SO was sought of Manawatu, which it was unable to give, as no profit on the gate at the matches was expected. Marlborough will be the next challenger, and will be offered the Southland dates, February 15 and 16.
