CHEAPER TOLL CALLS

SUCCESS OF BRITISH EXPERIMENT REVENUE OP J550.000 IN THREE MONTHS * (By Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, December. 29. Three months ago a new scheme by which people might telephone to any part of the country for Is after 7 o'clock in the evening, was brought into force. The millionth ! shilling call has now been made, which means a revenue of £50,000 ;to the Post Office. Sir Kingsley Wood, the Postmas-ter-General, described the success of the cheaper night rate scheme as "phenomenal." "I have never seen anything to equal the public's response to the scheme," he said. "I am more convinced that the social telephone call is now a habit rather thanja luxury." A special committee of Post Office experts which has been considering the possibility of reducing telegram charges will make recommendations to the Postmaster-General early in the New Year. One scheme under consideration is that the minimum charge (for 12 words) shall be reduced from Is to 9d.

It is possible, however, that the committee may recommend an increase in the number of words for the Is fee.
