NOISY MOTOR-CYCLISTS

10 THB »DITOB 0» THE FRBSB. Sir, —I wish to add my support to the increasing volume of protests by exasperated citizens against intolerable and unnecessary kinds of noise, chief of which is easily that created by the motor-cycle. There are drivers of these fiendish contraptions who either take delight in disturbing the nights of sleeper and sick alike, or are so selfish or thick-headed that it never occurs to them that to make these raucous noises is to constitute themselves a public nuisance and a menace to health. Surely the laws framed to protect the people are not so lacking that there is no way of dealing with these disturbers of the peace during sleeping and waking hours, or are we to understand that our administrators are helpless? In other parts stringent measures have been taken to ensure reasonable quiet when peaceful people and the sick and suffering are trying to rest. The Minister for Health should be urged to give attention to this matter. Government departments and municipal authorities could surely take action that would at least minimise our sufferings. The statement made by a visitor recently that Christchurch is a quiet city causes derision rather than civic pride.—Yours, etc.. GLOUCESTER STREET. January 18, 1935.
