NEW BRIGHTON NOTES

I VISITORS The beach has been visited by large numbers of people during the week, and with the fine evenings many have remained in the borough until a late hour. Bathing by moonlight has been popular. The borough traffic inspector (Mr F. Blewitt) is satisfied with the behaviour of the thousands of motorists who have visited his district during the holidays. St. Enoch's The Rev. F. H. Bailey, at present of St. Martins, has been appointed to St. Enoch's, and will take up his duties on .February 3. St. Enoch's has been without a resident minister since the Rev. D. B. Ashford left in September. The Rev. G. K. Aitken, who , was appointed to St. Enoch's, has been unable to take an active part in the affairs of the church because of ill health, and the Rev. A. C. Watson, of St. Paul's, was appointed to act in the meantime. Mr Bailey has previously been in charge at Wakanui, Hinds, Hanmer, and St. Martins. Social Evenings The New Brighton Bowling Club held its usual weekly whist tournament in the pavilion, and the prizewinners were Mesdames I. Searby. E. Wyatr, and H. A. Bishop. The weekly card and dance evening arranged by the social committee of the local sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association held in the Pier Hall, resulted in prizes for euchre being won by Miss K. Jackson, Messrs H. Bourgeois, and F. Booth. The competition was won by Mrs T. Egan. The music for dancing was played by Mrs H. Ross-Smith, assisted by Mr F. Arnold. Mr R. Andrews was master of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr Fisherton and partner. The successful players at the weekly card evening to assist the funds of the District High School Committee were Mesdames R. J. Jackson, Whitrose, and C. Powell, and Messrs S. Peters, F. Larcombe, and J. Kennedy. Mrs Bert Hanna won the competition. Bowls Three rinks from Linwood played against New Brighton. The home club won by two games to one. The club rink championship has now reached an interesting stage, C. Stokes being the only skip with two lives. Muirson, Marriott, and Jacobson each have one life. Personal Mr and Mrs R. Bargrove and Miss Grace Bargrove are spending a holiday at Hinds. Mrs T. McNab, of Owaka, a delegate to the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, is staying with her cousin, Mrs F. Blewitt, Esplanade. Miss Ada Hall, daughter of Mr and Mrs H. M. Hall (Bexley), left during the week en route for London. Mr Lawrence Buxton, of Wanganui (son of Mr and Mrs J. Buxton, Seaview road), is on a visit to his parents. Accident Colin Kennedy, the four-year-old son of Mr and Mrs W. D. Kennedy, fell from the jetty near the tramway bridge on Thursday, and was rescued by two by-standers, a man and a boy, alter sinking twice. There was a strong current at the time.

NORTH BEACH PERSONAL Mr and Mrs V. Colville and family who have been staying at Waimate for the Christmas holidays, have returned to their home, the Esplanade. Mr and Mrs R. Gadd (Wellington) who have been visiting Mrs R. A. Gadd (Bowhill road), will return home today. Mr and Mrs W. Dunlop (Woolston), who have been the guests of Mrs L. R. Moore (Tonks street), have returned home. Mrs F. Collins, who has been staying with Mrs H. T. Barker (Travis road), has returned to Ashburton. Miss Jean Parker (Jubilee avenue) has returned from a visit to Wellington. Surf Club Gala The North Beach Surf Club, assisted by the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade, is holding a gala in Thomson Park on Saturday next. The gala is being organised by a strong combined committee of surf club and fire brigade members, with Mr J. F. Stokes as chairman and Mr L. R. Moore as organiser. The programme will include various sideshows and amusements, etc. Derry's Military Band will play. This will be the first gala to be held at North Beach for three years, and the first occasion Thomson 'Pai'k has been used for a gala. Beach Patrol Mr T. Foster, who has been employed as beach patrol at North Beach for the last month, will cease duty to-day. The cessation of his work has been made necessary by lack of finance. Visit of Duke Arrangements have been made for the children of Standards 111. to VI. in the North Beach School to attend the demonstration in honour of the Duke of Gloucester at Lancaster Park on Monday. The children should be at the gates of the park at 9.30 a.m. The pupils of last year's sixth standard are invited to join the others. Farewell Social A meeting of the committee arranging the farewell social to Mr F. J. Lawrence Scott, was held in Mr E. A. M. Leaver's rooms, Bowhill road. Mr Leaver presided. Arrangements for the music were completed. It was decided that the speakers should include representatives of the organisations Mr Scott had been associated with, St. Faith's Church, the boy scouts, the New Brighton District High School, the North Beach Surf Club, and the North Beach Progress League. The social will be held on Wednesday in the Memorial Hall. Surf Club Dance The North Beach Surf Club will hold the seventh dance of the holiday season in the Memorial Hall this evening.
