Two were considered to be large shocks, the others being rather smaller. One of the smaller disturbance was thought to have had its origin in New Zealand. The largest shock occurred on the morning of New Year's Day. The first waves were recorded on the Galitzin seismographs at the observatory at 7.3.37 a.m.. and the records were disturbed for about three hours. It was estimated that the origin of this earthquake was about 6500 miles away. Earlier on the same morning the Wood-Anderson seismometer, designed for recording near earthquakes, showed that two smaller shocks had occurred, and one of these, it is thought, originated in New Zealand. The fourth earthquake, a fairly large one, originated about 2000 miles from Christchurch. It was recorded en the Galitzin seismograph on Wednesday morning.
