Owing to heavy rain in the morning, followed by interrriittent showers, there was no play in the South Island Lawn Tennis Championships till 2 p.m. to-day. Rudkin (Christchurch) and W.G. Robertson and Mrs D. Barker (South Canterbury), the timaru pair lost the first two points through successive double faults by Mrs Barker, but although Robertson secured the next point by a good placement the Christchurch pair won the game, thanks to the good driving of Sandral. and his placements from the net. The home pair evened, Sandral bieng forced into errors through Robertson's forceful shots. Robertson and Mrs Barker won the set at 6-3, after being down love 40. Melbourne, has apparently been carried out with little regard to the recent form in Australia of the players concerned. Recent matches have demonstrated that in Australia, at least, many world-ranked "stars" I are definitely inferior to some of the Jower-rankcd Australian players. It is expected, therefore, that there will be many upsets before the final rounds, and that the players contesting' the semi-finals will not be those favoured by the seeding committee. The order of the seeding in the various events is as follows: — Men's Singles—(l) F. J. Perry, (2) J. H. Crawford, (3) R. Menzel, (4) C. Boussus, (5) V. McGratti, (6) A.
