MIXED GOLF

NEW ZEALAND WOMAN'S SUCCESS

ITBOII OUB OWH COMESPOKDEN'I.I LONDON, December 15. At Worplesdon this week, wellknown cricketers with their wives and others took part in a mixed foursomes match. The sides were led by A. P. F. Chapman and Mrs Chapman respectively, and with much determination. Mrs Chapman's side won by 14 points to 10 on the day's play, having gained a lead of four points in the morning. Mrs Chapman was formerly Miss Gertrude Lowry, of Okawa, Hawke's Bay. On both sides there were some wellknown lady golfers. For the cricketers' team Miss K. Garnham partnered the Hon. F. S. G. Calthor.pe, and Miss Fishwick helped A. P. F. Chapman. On the other side, J. S. F. Morrison, an imposing figure and formidable player of foursomes, was assisted by Miss M. Peech. The play in the top game in both rounds was of a high standard, says the "Morning Post" correspondent. In the morning Morrison and Miss Peech, after standing dormy three, were taken to the last green. They were said to have relaxed, possibly owing to a misguided courtesy, in these last three holes. Morrison, who, in spite of threatening weather, did not encumber himself with his golf-skirt, played at the top of his form. In the afternoon Calthorpe and Miss Garnham were three up after four holes. Then ', the match began. Both sides hurled "eagles" at each other, but Miss Peech and Morrison could not erase the results of early indiscretions, and went down arguing merrily. Perhaps the best performance of the day was that of Miss Jean Hamilton (who played very steadily) and B. H. Valentine. Valentine's style is peculiar; he stands further in front of the ball than seems consistent with credibility, but he hits it vast distances and generally straight. Even on the green his methods are unorthodox, for he laughs while he is putting, as if the act of holing were something quite absurd. In the afternoon, Mrs Chapman and Colonel Ozanne held this pair for 14 holes, a brave piece of play. Near the bottom of Mrs Chapman's team, T. J. Molony surprised many by winning his game in the morning and halving in the afternoon. COMING-OFAGE PARTY To honour Miss Ethelwynne Hayman, on the occasion of her twentyfirst birthday, a number of friends paid a surprise visit to the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs A. S. Hayman, Willowby, Ashburton. Games and competitions were enjoyed, and the Rev. R. McGregor expressed the good wishes of all present to Miss Hayman. VISITORS TO.
