HOLIDAY TRAVEL
RAILWAY TRAFFIC MORE INWARD PASSENGERS Inward railway passenger traffic to Christchurch is gradually increasing, while the outward traffic has lightened. Yesterday morning the express for the south carried about 460 persons, while the ordinary West Coast mail train was full. The special horse train which left at 10 5 a.m. for Greymouth yesterday was well patronised by trainers and attendants. About 700 passengers arrived by the train from Lyttelton yesterday which connected with the inter-island steamer. The first express from the south last night brought 250 passengers and. the second express 450. TRAMWAY RECEIPTS INCREASE IMPROVEMENT RECORDED For the Christmas and New Year holidays tramway revenue was £515 more than it was for the same period a year ago. The total increase for the New Year period was £213, and at Christmas the takings were £302 more than they were in 1933. On Wednesday £730 was.taken in cash fares on the tramways, the day being very warm and fine. On January 2 last year the amount taken was £569, a difference of £l6l. Rain affected the excursions to the seaside yesterday, when the reduced fares came into operation. The cheap fares will be available during the rest of the school holidays, Sundays included.
