ACCIDENTS
TAXI AND MOTOR-CAR COLLIDE FOUR PERSONS INJURED Four persons were injured in a collision between a taxi and a private motor-car at the intersection of Durham and Tuam streets about 8.15 on Monday evening. The driver of the taxi, W. J. Bannon, 44 Park road, Addington, was the only person to escape injury.
The taxi carried the driver and two passengers. One of these, F. Lowe, of 304 Yaldhurst road, Riccarton, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital suffering from injuries to the head and shock. The other, D. Norris, 43 Langdon road, Waltham, received head injuries, but was discharged. The motor-car was driven by Mr T. A. De La Rue, of 33 Fuller street, Kaiapoi, and he, with his passenger, Mr M. Collins, of Warner's Hotel, was also taken to hospital, but both were discharged. Lowe was reported to be in a satisfactory condition last evening.
MOTOR-CYCLE AND LORRY COLLIDE While riding a motor-cycle in Kaiapoi at the Scwell street intersection on Monday morning, John McLean, a young man residing at Studholme street, Spreydon, collided with a motor-lorry. The front of the motorcycle was badly damaged, but the driver and a pillion rider escaped serious injury. CYCLIST INJURED A. E. Russell, of 83 McFaddens road, St. Albans, Buffered head injuries about 1.30 yesterday morning when the bicycle he was riding in Rutland street skidded, throwing him into a side channel. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital in a St. John Ambulance, and was admitted. Last evening his condition was reported to be satisfactory. TWO PERSONS DROWNED WAIKATO RIVER TRAGEDY (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBASI.) AUCKLAND, December 25. A double drowning accident occurred in the Waikato river this afternoon, near the Tuakau bridge. The victims were:— Roy Lowrie, aged 26, married, a farmer, of Bombay. Rex Wallingtford Bush, aged 19, single, a shop assistant, of Tuakau. The tragedy was witnessed by Lowrie's wife and two young children, Bush's elder sister, and several other persons. Bush went for a swim, and suddenly called for help. Lowrie rushed into the water to assist Bush. He reached and caught him, but after making fruitless efforts to move toward the shore he must have released his grip, for Bush disappeared from view. Lowrie then tried to regain the land, but almost immediately sank, and did not appear again.
GIRL SERIOUSLY INJURED FALL WHILE CARRYING RIFLE ISrSCUL TO T*B PF*SB.) NELSON, December 24. Miss Winnie Rowling, youngest daughter of Mr S. Rowling, of Riwaka, was seriously injured through the accidental discharge of a pea-rifle on Saturday evening about 7.30 o'clock. Miss Rowling went out on to the verandah of her home carrying a pearifle with the intention of driving away some starlings which were causing a disturbance on the roof of the house. She slipped on the steps and the rifle discharged. Miss Maureen Rowling was the only other person in the house at the time and she found her sister on the ground, and the rifle some distance away. She was removed to the Nelson Hospital, where her condition to-day was serious.
VAN DRIVER INJURED COLLISION WITH TRAIN (PRESS tSSOCUTIO* TKLBQBAM.) AUCKLAND, December 25. A collision between a special express train from Wellington and a light van occurred shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday about a mile north of Ngaruawahia. The driver of the van, William James Shaw, a radio salesman, aged 22, of Huntly, received severe head injuries. The van, which was owned by the Huntly Radio Company, was crossing the railway line at what is known as Wallbank's crossing, leading from a property on one side of the line to the Main South road on the other, when it was struck by the engine and carried a short distance down the line. The van was extensively damaged. The injured man was picked up by the train crew, and taken on to Huntly. His condition was fairly serious. An operation was performed, and he was reported to be progressing satisfactorily. INJURIES PROVE FATAL (PHESS ASSOCIATION TELBGEAM.) HAMILTON, December 25. The death occurred at the Waikato Hospital last evening of A. J. Meade, aged 58, married, permanent way inspector at Frankton Junction, who was injured south of Taupiri station on Tuesday afternoon when a motor jigger he was riding with another railway officer was overtaken by a mixed suffered grave head injuries and was admitted to hospital ma critical condition. His companion, H, W Beasley, district engineer at Auckland, who suffered concussion, is making good progress. Until recently Meade was inspector of permanent way at Springfield.
CHILD DROWNED (TEIM iSSOCUTIOK HAMILTON, December 24. A fatal drowning accident occurred at the Hamilton lake this afternoon. Robert Burnell, aged two years, a son of Mr W. Burnell, of Frankton, lost his life while playing in three feet of water. His mother had left a family of four small children at the lake while visiting the public hospital.
MAN DROWNED IN RIVER (FBZ3S ASSOCIATION TELXGBAM.) MASTERTON, December 25. Ronald de Waney, aged 24, a single man, employed by Mr W. Caspin, a farmer of Waehakeke, went swimming in the river on Sunday and did iiot return. His body was found this morning in a hole. A verdict of death by drowning was returned at the inquest - -
