THE RATING TANGLE
TO THE EDITOR OK I'HK I'RSSS. Sir,—May I thank you for your brief but courteous explanation that your leading article in -."The Press" about the rating tangle was not merely satire but a genuine heartfelt effort to remedy a mistake which for the size of it should never have happened. I am only sorry that large numbers of subscribers and ratepayers will not see eye to eye with you in your suggestion. Why should they? Your very kind remarks regarding my infallibility are flattering indeed and I am honoured. As regards my honesty (which you seem to doubt) it may in the fulness of time reach to the stage of my infallibility as you hope. At present I venture to state that it is quite the equal of any of the same commodity that can be shown by any editor of any newspaper, and I am not praising myself. There may be more subscribers probably of more proved honesty than myself, and even a shade more infallible as far as that goes, who look upon the tangle and your suggested remedy as I do. In fact I did notice one whose letter was below and in the same column as my own in Saturday's paper. So, dishonest as I may appear in your eye:* I am not the only unfortunate who seems to have a different viewpoint from your own. May be there are still others again. I shall be quite interested to read their letters in The Press." if published, of course. In the meantime, thank you again for attempting to show me where you fhink I am wrong. I shall spare no pains to reach that pitch of honesty which you desire. It will be a wonderful moment to me should the object become achieved. —Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. December 24, 1934.
