Holy Communion was celebrated at 7, 8, and 11 a.m.. the latter being choral communion. The altar at St. Joseph's Church was beautifully decorated with flowers by the sisters of the Convent of Mercy yesterday for the Christmas services, and there were large congregations at all the services. Mass and holy communion were celebrated at the early morning services, and Missa Cantata at 10.30 a.m. The usual devotional service was held last evening.

The Christmas Season Lyttelton shopkeepers report that, in spite of the dearth of work on the waterfront during the last two weeks, the Christmas season was the most successful they have had for several years. The public were spending more freely, probably due to the increase in the wages of Government servants and to the bonus given to relief workers. On Monday afternoon and evening the streets in the business area of the port were thronged with busy shoppers.
