A test of the efficiency of the Great South road and Mount Wellington fire brigades was made recently by the Auckland superintendent. Mr W. L. Wilson, and members of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board. A test call was put through to the Great South road station, and the siren sounded in Mount Wellington highway. The South road machine, with an officer slid three men, arrived at the point of call in eight minutes, the distance travelled being about four miles. The Mount Wellington brigade's Panmure machine arrived three minutes later. "In the circumstances this is quite satisfactory." said Mr Wilson, reporting on the test to the fire board. The Minister for Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, evidently believes in things being done properly. At the conclusion of the annual prizegiving ceremony at the Wanganui Technical College on Friday the usual cheers were given by the pupils. At the end of the cheering a general hub-bub occurred, and everyone was somewhat surprised to see the Minister move forward and call for silence. The speeches had been given, and the ceremony appeared to be finished, so that the unusual request caused a stir of interest. "That was not a 100 per cent, cheer," said the Minister. "Some of the boys were only using 60 per cent, of their lung power and some of the girls only 40 per cent. Now give three cheers of 100 per cent, lung power for all those who have helped the school." And, with the Minister leading them, the school gave three rousing cheers, with every youngster doing his best to beat his neighbour. "That's better. One hundred per ceiit.," said Mr Smith, as he turned round to the staff and officials.
