WAIMAIRI COUNCIL AFFAIRS

TO TBI BDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir, —In response to Mr J. M. Preston's request, I would advise him and all other ratepayers to secure a copy of the current year's report of the Waimairi Council's affairs. He may have a slight difficulty in securing a copy, for they are not dispensed with prodigality as are the funds supplied by the patient ratepayers. 1 would further suggest that items of a questionable character be made the subject of a complaint to the AuditorGeneral in Wellington. Otherwise, if allowed to go unchallenged, the extravagance will be countenanced and will, in all probability, continue. In these difficult times, every avenue should be explored, to prevent overspending, and it is only when urgent protests are made that'the curb is put on profligacy.—Yours, etc., SCRUTATOR. December 17, 1934. [When this letter was shown to Mr G. S. Cowper, the county clerk, he said that he did not wish to comment on letters written by anonymous correspondents.]

TO THE XDITOB OF THE PfiXSS. Sir, —At a meeting of the Waimairi j County Council the question of elecI tricity loans and service was referred to a committee for a report. I made mention in a previous letter to the Municipal Electricity Department servicing portions of the Heathcote county, Halswell county, and New Brighton. The Municipal Electricity Department's power lines run through the Avon riding of the Waimairi county; therefore this portion of the county could be transferred to the Municipal Electricity Department, with benefit to the ratepayers, i.e., cheaper power and light; also the present benefits being granted to Municipal Electricity Department users of electricity. If Councillor Liggins has the interests of the ratepavers at heart he will arrange for this riding, which he represents, to be given this advantage.—Yours, etc., WAIMAIRI RATEPAYER. December 21, 1934.
