GRENADIER GUARDS BAND
TO Tins EDITOH OF THE PBBS9. Sir,—l have read Mr John Farrell's comments on my letter, and regret to say find them extremely unconvincing. He says "The greater part of the music it will play cannot be heard to advantage in the open air." Then why represent the band on the posteis as performing in the open air? Band contests have frequently been held in the Barracks, and the organisers have not found insuperable difficulties in providing seating accommodation On the posters is the following: "The Band of his Majesty s Grenadier Guards, by special permission of the King" and the letterpress inside the folder states that "it is only after protracted negotiations extending overmany years that permission has at last been granted by his Majesty the King for the Grenadier Guards Band to tour Australia and New Zealand. This, of course, reads very well but, after all. if the band has been placed at the disposal of Messrs J. and N. Tait on a money-making basis, I think a lot of this might with advantage be omitted. Again, how does Mr Farrell know there are few who would be prepared to stand for two hours. Well he does not. On his own showing about 3000 persons will be able to obtain admission for 2s plus tax, plus early door Is extra, whereas probably 10,000 would be nearer the number of those who would wish to hear the band but could not afford more than 2s—Yours, etc., CHARLES R. CLARK. December 21, 1934.
