WELLINGTON SCORES 283 AUCKLAND'S BAD START {PRESS association teleuram.) WELLINGTON, December 21. Considering that the conditions were ideal for run-getting, the batting in the two-days' match between Auckland and Wellington, which opened at the Basin Reserve this afternoon, was uninspiring. The play started at 1 p.m., and during the afternoon 1wickets fell for 288. E. D. Blundell, who was leading the Wellington team for the first time, beat H. G. for the spin of the coin, and the Wellington eleven had first strike on a firm wicket and fast outfield. R- "• Bush and D. R. Garrard stood out ol the northern team. The Wellington innings opened mauspiciously, as with six runs up Hepburn touched a rising' ball from Cowie and was well taken by the Auckland wicketkeeper, Edmonds, who was standing well back to the fast bowler H. Ell, a Wellington colt, then joined Ward and the pair put on 60 runs for the second wicket. Cowie, Matheson, Sharp, and Townsend all had a turn at the bowling crease, but Ell showed smart footwork in getting out to punch all the bowlers hard. With the total at 68, Ell, who had reached 40 in 45 minutes, was trapped Ibw by the youthful Gisbornc googly bowler, M. Sharp, who was keeping the ball well up to the bat. Tindill .joined Ward and a period of dull play ensued. The Auckland bowlers were keeping a good lengtn. and the batsmen were not inclined to take risks. Ward was soundness personified, but came down heavily on anything short or overpitched. At the tea adjournment at 3.45 the score stood ai; 164 for two wickets, Ward being 77 and Tindill 43. The break proved disastrous to the Wellington team, as upon the resumption the wickets began to fall, rapidly, and from two for 68 the board soon showed six for 180. Tindill, who had assisted Ward to put on exactly 100 for the third wicket, was bowled by Vivian for 44. Ward, alter having batted for just upon three hours lor 32, was bowled by a good one from Townsend. Riley and Wilson found the bowling of Townsend too good for them, but R. O'Neill infused some life into the proceedings by hitting up 20 in 10 minutes. He scored 10 off an over from Townsend and eight oil' the next over from Sharp. After reaching 25 he was bowled by Matheson. J. R. Lamason and W. Tricklebank made a determined stand, which added 45 for the seventh wicket. After reaching 43, Lamason was beaten by a fast iri-swinger from Cowie. Blundell did not last long, and the innings closed at 5.25 for a total of 283. The Auckland bov/ling was steady throughout. Townsend, who bowls right-hand at a medium pace, kept a faultless length in sending down 27 overs for 88 runs and four wickets. He shared the honours with Cowie. a colt of good physique, who sends them down at a good pace. Off 22.4 overs he captured three wickets for 63. Matheson, Sharp, and Vivian all met with success.
With 13 minutes to bat. Auckland met with disaster, Blundell, the Wellington captain, securing two wickets for four runs. With the last ball of his second over he clean-bowled J. E. Mills with a beautiful in-swinger. The third ball of his third over trapped Matheson. Ibw. Following are the scores:- -
