SUMMER SCHOOL OF DRAMA
PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED FIVE COURSES ARRANGED Increasing interest is shown each week in the Summer School of Drama, which is to be held in Auckland from December 28 to January 10, under the auspices of the British Drama League, states the "New Zealand Herald." Applications for the prospectus have been received from as far afield as Fiji, the local secretary, Miss M. Earle, reports. Some particularly interesting courses have been arranged. In the producers classes, Professor J. Shelley, Professor of Education at Canterbury College, Mr F. E. McCallum, producer for the Auckland Little Theatre Society, and Mr W. S. Dale will give lectures on such subjects as stage management, lighting, properties, costume and make-up. In the acting classes, training will be given in stage technique, "business," exits and similar points. The rehearsal classes are "demonstration rehearsals," and will be conducted by Mr Arnold Goodwin, producer for the Auckland Workers' Educational Association; Miss Bessie Thomson, producer for the Duncdin Repertory Society; and Mrs Zoe Bart-Icy-Baxter, a prominent Auckland producer. These classes may be attended by students who prefer to be spectators rather than to take an active part in the plays. Parts can be given only to students who can attend the rehearsals daily. The plays prepared at rehearsal classes through the course of the school will be performed on the final evening. Miss Molly Searle, of the Cecil Sharpe House, London, will hold a class for folk dancing, and Madame Edith Baird will give lectures on Greek dancing, and the art of mime. Miss Beatrice Mackenzie will conduct classes in choral speaking, one of the
chief features of the Timaru School lust year. The morning classes will be held at the Epsom Girls' Grammar School and the evening lectures at the Workers' Educational Association Hall. The subjects at the evening sessions will include "Dancing and its Relation to the Drama" by Madame Baird; "Stage Lighting and Designing Stage Sets," by Professor Shelley; "Eugene O'Neill, Dramatist and Psychologist," by Mr W. S. Dale; and a demonstration of make-up by Mr F. E. McCallum. It is hoped that there will also be a play by a local team followed by a critical discussion led by members of the staff, and a lecture on theatre construction, with models, by Mr J. D. Swan. "THE BOHEMIAN GIRL" A British and Dominions unit has left for the Continent to photograph exterior scenes for the production of Balfe's opera, "The Bohemian Girl." Anna Ncaglc and Fernand Graavcy, who appeared in "Bitter Sweet" and the British and Dominions musical production "The Queen's Affair," will again appear in the leading roles. "The Bohemian Girl" achieved great success as a silent film some years ago with Gladys Cooper and Ivor Novello in the lead. Moncton Hoffc, who conIributed largely to the success of the film "Bitter Sweet," was responsible for the translation and dialogue of "The Bohemian Girl," the script of which has been fully brought up to date.
