MANY SIGNS OF RECOVERY
CHEERFUL FIGURES MR HOLLAND QUOTES STATISTICS "I hope that these figures I am about to give will cheer and encourage you," said Mr H. Holland in opening the Wesley Church Horticultural Show yesterday afternoon. Mr Holland gave a few interesting statistics which, he said, indicated a remarkable recovery. He said that there were increases in the production of all commodities except gold, and he gave the following figures as encouraging signs:— Increased sales of motor-cars during the last six months of 2513: increased sales of motor-trucks of 907 in six months; . Fourteen thousand fewer unememployed than at this time last year; Exports up by over £11,500,000; Imports up by £3,974,000 in nine months: An increase in the banking turnover of £79,000,000; Share values had now passed the 1926 level; An increase in marriage registrations during the last nine months of 388; Factory production showed a substantial increase; Sales tax returns had increased by £193,000 during the last seven months; In the same period customs duty had increased by £624,000; The value of land transactions in seven months had increased by £1,761,000, and the number of mortgages registered showed an increase in value of £1,666,000; Beer duty had increased by £19,450; Film hire had increased bv £7496; ' Stamps and death duties had increased by £312,680; Land tax had increased by £7291; and
Income tax had increased bv £291,001.
"These figures, if maintained, will assure New Zealand of a happy and prosperous Christmas," said Mr Holland.
