A DISTINGUISHED PRESBYTERIAN

VISIT OF DR. JAMES MOFFATT A distinguished Scottish Presbyterian, the Rev. James Moffatt, 8.D.. D.Litt. F Hon. M.A. and D.D. tOxford), Washburn Professor of Church History at the Union Theological Seminary, New York, will give the principal address at the seventieth anniversary celebrations of the Presbytery of Christchureh next Wednesday. He will arrive in Christchureh 6n Wednesday morning, will give the address at St. Paul's Church, and be the guest of members of the Presbytery at luncheon before leaving for Dunedin by the midday express. Dr. Moffatt was born at Glasgow in July, 1870, and was educated at the Academy, University, and Free Church College, Glasgow. He graduated with honours in Classics and received the John Clark Fellowship in Classics, and many other scholastic distinctions. He was ordained in 189(>. and in 1907 was appointed Jowett lecturer at London University. From 1911 to 1915 he was Yates Professor of Greek and New Testament Exegesis at Mansfield College, Oxford, and until 1927 he was professor of Church Historv at United Free Church College. Glasgow. He has been Washburn Professor of Church History at the Union Theological Seminary. New York, since 1927. His publications include "The Historical New Testament," an English edition, and translation of Harnack's Ausbreitung des Chrislcntums: "The Golden Book of Owen." "Literary Illustrations' of the Bible." "A Primer to the Novels of George Meredith." editions of Thossalonians and Revelation in the Expositor's Greek Testament. "Paul and Pau'linism." "A Critical Introduction to New Testament Literature." "Theologv of the Gospels." a new translation of the New Testament. "The Approach to the New Testament" (Hibbert Lectures), an international critical commentary on the Epistle to thn Hebrews. "The Old Testament—a New Translation," "The Bible in Scots Literature," "Everyman's Life of .Tesir-." "The Expositor's Year Book." "The Golden Book of Tillotsen." "The Presbyterian Churches," "Love in Hip New Testament." "The Day Before Yesterdnv." and "Grace in the New Testament."
