OLD-TIME DANCE I The committee of the West LyltclI ton School will hold a further old-time | dance in the Excelsior Hall on Saturj day evening. The wearing of flannels will be optional. j Magistrate's Court I Mr H. A. Young, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, John Thomas Murphy was convicted and lined 10s and costs 10s. \ Jarnes Edward Bisman, licensee ot the Empire Hotel, for whom Mr A. W. Smithson appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of supplying liquor after hours. | Sergeant D. Wilson said that when he entered the hotel in company with a constable, he found a number of men in the office with Bisman. They had liquor before them and Bisman did not deny that the drinks had been I paid for. Defendant usually conducted the hotel satisfactorily. Mr Smithson said the men found on the premises were personal friends of Bisman's. The bars were not. open. ] He asked that the court deal leniently with defendant, who conducted the hotel in a satisfactory manner. ' Defendant was convicted and fined £7. with costs 10s. For being on the premises of the I Empire Hotel after hours, the following ! defendants were each convicted and fined £l. with costs 10s, Andrew Berry, I Reginald Duckworth, John Jones, RonI aid Patrick Sinclair, and Samuel SinI clair. James Ross, barman at the Royal HoteJ, was charged that, being a person other than the licensee, he did supply liquor after hours. Grace Ann Moore, the licensee, was charged with having, through her servant, James Ross, "supplied liquor after hours. Evidence was given that the police, on entering the hotel at 9.0 p.m. found two men. Wallace and Bowden, in a room upstairs, with the barman. Ross. There were a number of empty glasses on a tray which Ross had in his hand. In a statement tc the court, Ross said the men were personal friends whom he had invited to have a drink at his expense. They did not pay for any liquor. The licensee, Mrs Moore, did not know they were on the premises. Ross was convicted and fined £4, I with 10s costs. Mrs Moore was convicted and fined £3, with 10s costs. The two men. Thomas Wallace and Thomas Bowden. were each convicted of being on licensed premises after hours and lined £l, with costs 10s. Reginald McAlear Ball, for whom Mr D. W. William Thomas Laming and William B. A yacht race for old-time yachting skippers will be held by the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club on

Saturday afternoon, for A and B class yachts. The club will hold a Z class trial race on Saturday, and two tria. races on Sunday. The Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Association will hold a further Sanders Cup trial race on Saturday afternoon over a triangular course. An endeavour is being made to hold a further race on Sunday. At a meeting of the committee oJ the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club on Tuesday night. 14 new members were elected. It was arranged to hold a picnic at Pile Bay on December 9.
