STEADIER VALUES The deluge of sheep at the post- ; Carnival sale, 10 days ago, prompted I more caution by fatteners on Wedncs- j day and arrivals of 'sheep by rail must have been of record small dimensions. More than half an ordinary penning had been turned -out- from the earlier sale, and in spile of these coming back the total entry was only about 4000. The market steadied up as a consequence, and as (here was some export buying, butchers secured by no: means an over supply. Some j of them, no doubt, had purchases i carried over from the preceding week. ! The general advance'was about Is Gd j a head. Light-weight wethers were* in very firm request, the exporters taking a fair niirhber that appeared to be ranging round about 4id to 4:; d a lb. This set a standard which, for this period of the season, was not discouraging. 'The smaller, number of ewer, improved the quality of the cn'ry as a whole. Many export \velhers were ranging around 20s to- n j shade more. At the corresponding j rale last year there was an advance of! lip to 2s 6d a head. j Spring lambs numbered about 220 hear!, and prices jumped quite a penny a lb on the preceding week. The heavier lambs averaged.7Jd a lb, .but lighter sold in cases at a full !!d. Now that the works are opening it may be expected that there will be full j entry next week. i The following is a comparison of rheep prices at the sale on Wednesday with those at the corresponding market last year:— ** Nov. There were scarcely enough representative lines to enable a comparison to be made with lnsi year. The good rain has given feed a further fillip, and as most farmers have trouble in keep ; ng the feed down they hav" no sheep to ofTcr. A few forward wethers sold well and some hoggets were passed. Possibly with the good prices being quoted fo> - mutton for export, these classes will show a keen market next week Twelve months ago the feed position was bad. V. ■. - ?. i. H . The two markets aggregated 980 head, more than sufficient for trade requirements, but a fair amount of buying of lighter steers has been done by graziers. As a rule it is a little later in the season when this element enters the market, but feed this season needs no conservation—net so far, at all events. The 20 per cent, of really good beef did not shew much change on the preceding week, a substantial proportion of it making from 26s to 27s 6d per 1001b, but quite an amount of serviceable beef sold at 23s to 255. The Peninsula cattle are coming in good condition. The draft of prize-winning steers at the Little River show the previous day, bred and fattened by Commander Hall, on Peraki estate, was a great advertisement for the Aberdeen-Angus breed, and. incidentally, for the grazing qualities of the Peninsula:— St <•••!*- x £ £ ,c Show steers .. - lo 1 M Ejclra prime heavy to II!'; 11 to IT!
