OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW ZEALAND DR. CONDLIFFE'S VIEWS The recent change in the tariff policy of the United States of America is considered by Dr. J. B. Condliffe to offer New Zealand a splendid opportunity of expanding her trade across: the Pacific. Dr. Condliffe, formerly professor of economics at Canterbury University Collc.cc. and now of thu economic intelligence service of the League ol' Nations, arrived in Christchurch yesterday on an extended holiday visit. In an interview, he referred to the intention of the United States Government, to negotiate a series of trade treaties, and said that New Zealand might, well make some move to capitalise the friendship that certainly existed between many parti of America and New Zealand and Australia. It was to be hoped, he added, that the United States would develop a freer trade with the rest of the world, but it must be recognised that tariff alteration was a job that took a great deal of time. Advantages that New Zealand might hope to obtain depended on the kind of bargain she could make with America.
