SOUTH CANTERBURY

: TIMARU PERSONAL The Rev. Father M. Murphy, S.M., was ordained to the priesthood 25 years ago yesterday, and it is the intention of the parishioners of the Church of the Sacred Heart to celebrate the jubilee. Father Murphy has worked in Timaru on two occasions, first as a young priest and later as parish priest. He is a member of the Timaru Central Relief Society and the Timaru Unemployment Committee. A native of Kurnara, Father Murphy was educated by the Sisters of Mercy there, later going to St. Patrick's College, Wellington. Hd completed his studies at Meanee Seminary, and was ordained at Napier in 1909. Hts first appointment was at Timaru, when the Very Rev. Dean Tubman, S.M., was parish priest. After eight years at Timaru, he went on active service as a padre with the New Zealand Forces. Returning to the Dominion, he was appointed to St. Mary's, Wellington-, remaining there for five years, and in 1926 he became parish priest at Napier. In 1932 he was appointed parish priest at Timaru. Presbyterian Social Service The annual meeting of the South Canterbury Social Service Association was presided over by the Rev. A. J. H. Dow. In its annual report the committee stated that four boys had been admitted to the home and four boys went to Christchurch. One of the older boys was at work in Timaru under the care of the committee, and one girl had left the home for a position. Two girls attended the high school and two were enrolled at the Technical School. The report of their work was for the most part good, and their conduct was excellent. The number under the care of the association was 28—20 at Timaru, seven at Christchurch, and one at work. The association was fortunate to finish the year with a small deficit, stated the report. The upkeep of the heme cost the Presbyterians of South Canterbury, apart from harvest produce, only £llß. A slightly more liberal support from the congregations would enable much needed repairs to be carried out. During the year a legacy of £l5O from the estate of Milt. Bowie was received, and as special conditions were attached to it the legacy was banked pending a suitable investment. Tac report was adopted. In moving the adoption of the cash statement, Mr D. Byers said that the contributions from the Presbyterians of South Canterbury to the funds of the Timaru home amounted to the small sum of lid a head a year. The motion was seconded by Mr J A Norrie and carried. Miniature Rifle Shooting D ,The Glen-iti Open Air Miniature Rule Club's new range was opened by Mr W. W. Andcri sen- | Automobile Association An increase of £195 members, making a total roll of 948. is disclosed in the annual report of the South Canterbury Automobile Association. The report states that the finances are in a healthy position. The expenditure has been kept down and the result of the year's work must be considered satisfactory. A recommendation from the last annual meeting to consider the acquisition of suitable club rooms was dealt with by the committee, which called a special meeting to consider the purchase of such a property. The meeting, however, decided against the proposal meanwhile. A proposal to institute a comprehensive road service had exercised the

minds of the committee for many years but to institute a system of patrols which would be of material use to members in all parts of the district was regarded as being too costly a venture, said the report, in consequence of which the appointing of garages in each district was decided upon. This was one of the most beneficial undertakings carried out by the association. After referring to its activities in the direction of checking lights and brakes, and painting the mudguards of cvcles white, the report states that it is hoped before the holiday season commences to issue a copy of a suitable road map of the South Island to all financial members. During the lost year the patrol officer, Mr F T. Owers, had attended race meetings, shows, sales, and other functions where motorists gather, and had rendered valuable assistance. Transport Licensing Authority Further business transacted by the No 8 Transport Licensing Authority at its Timaru fitting, Mr J. D. Hutchison presiding, was as follows: — C. W. McKenzie, Geraldine, was granted' a renewal of his passenger service license between Woodbury, Geraldine, and Timaru. At the request of applicant, the Sunday trip to Timaru was deleted. W. Boag applied for a license to carry on a goods srevice between Christchurch and Dunedin with three vehicle authorities, making three trips each way weekly. Mr H. J. Knight, on behalf of the applicant, asked for a renewal of the license with an amendment to three vehicle authorities instead of one, as at present. He stated that the application was made in 153.0, and that later a restriction was placed on the license by the Co-ordination Board. It was submitted that the restriction was wrong, owing to a wrong interpretation of the law. A ruling on a similar point had been sought by Ahstiss Motors (Nelson), in the Supreme Court, the finding of which was that the Co-ordination Board was constituted to consider cases of that kind. A special beard was being set up to consider these cases, although the court had stated that the Central Authority was empowered to do so. Mr Knight said the applicant admitted speeding in 1933, but that Mr Justice Frazer had held that that did not constitute illegal operation; If the Central Authority was wrong in its interpretation of illegal operation, then Boag was entitled to an automatic license. It was submitted that no breach of a by-law or statutory regulation constituted illegal operation of the whole '' On behalf of the Railway Department the application was opposed by Mr E. S. Brittenden, who contended that the service was quite unnecessary in that the railway service operated between Dunedin and Christchurch. He suggested that the application be restricted to the terms of the original license. Decision was reserved.
