—♦ — ANNUAL MEETING OF CASH CENTRE i THE BIG ROAD RACE A season considered fairly successful in the light of the decreased popularity of the sport was reviewed at the gnnual meeting of the North Canter- ! bury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union last evening. The annual report referred to the difficulty that had been experienced in financing the Oamaru to Christchurch road race, and said that further schemes for raising funds would have to b.- considered if the race were to be continued. Mr W. J- Walter presided. Nine clubs were afiiliated to the centre, the annual report said. Of these, four paid more than '£loo in prize-money or had more than 50 jncmbers. Owing to the financial pesition, several clubs had been compelled to abandon their meetings a jew years ago. and had not been able to revive them yet. In spite of poor entries at the beginning of the season, and the prospect of poor entries for the big road races, there was a great improvement, and the big events received good support frcm the riders. It was regretted than the English Park track was not used by cash ciubs last season. The centre had been negotiating with the English Park authorities for a series of meetings to be held during the present season, tut so far no finality has been reached.' Eighty-three competitors had been registered by the centre during ihc last season. Details of the registrations are as follows: 44 season, 39 road racing. This year a change was made from the usual course for the big road race the event being held from Oamaru to Christchurch, a distance of more than ; 170 miles. In spite of the increased distance the event attracted 05 entries ' practically all provinces in the Dominion being represented. The centre's thanks were extended to all who assisted to make the race a success. Special thanks were due to the Mayor of Oamaru for guaranteeing £25, which proved of great assistance in the successful running of the race. Financing; the Koad Race The difficulty of raising the necessary finance successfully to conduct the race was liable to prove a serious problem in the future. The support from the cycle trade in Christchurch was getting smaller every vear; thi-, year's total of cash amounted to only £5 ss. If the race was to be continued, some other scheme of raising meney would have to be considered The championship events hetd during the year were won as follows--170 miles New Zealand road championship, H. G. Watson: 70 miles Mairehau championship, S. W. Weir; 30 miles South Island championship, H. J Smither; 50 miles Canterbury championship; W. J. Lamberton; 1 mile Canterbury championship, W. J. Weir: 3 miles North Canterbury champioiv'hio 11. J. Crofts. Good support had been f-u-thcomi'i" in all athletic events, the entries at all nice ings being sati-factorv. Axemen's events were very popular, and each year saw more clubs catering for the axemen. It was regretted "thai the Tug-of-War Association, which was affiliated with the centre, decided to cancel i s affiliation. Steps would no (loubi be taken again to endeavour to ."lducc tho Tug-oi'-War Club lo work with the centre. 'fl'e centre did net c.\t'OL-i;;:icc a j vuy successful year financially.
