LAWN TENNIS

UNIVERSITY BEATS CANTERBURY DISAPPOINTING STANDARD IN REPRESENTATIVE MATCH By lour matches to two, a New Zealand University team defeated Canterbury in a representative match at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon. The University team was that which has been suggested for the forthcoming tour of Australia, although the selection has not yet been finally made. The Canterbury team, however, was necessarily not at full strength, as two of the first four on the ranking list were playing for the university, and C. Angas, the province's leading player, was unable to play. The fixture was arranged to provide match practice for the university players, but the standard of the play was very disappointing. Barnett's Accuracy T. Rhodes-Williams, present Canterbury champion, was quite unable to find touch until the second set of his match with H. A. Barnett, whose shots, although carrying little speed, invariably landed within a yard of the back line and gave his opponent few opportunities to force the pace. In trying to speed up the game, Rhodes-Williams netted his drives. However, in the second set he made the agile Barnett do plenty 'of chasing. The latter generally had a finelyjudged passing t shot or lob in reply to his opponent's net attacks, and it was Rhodes-Williams who made the mistakes at the crucial points. Playing far more aggressively than usual, H. Dymond (Canterbury) started in brilliant form against A. R. Cant, and went through the first set with a fine driving attack. . Cant had no chance to settle down to his usual attacking game, but in the second set Dymond himself fell into errors and Cant levelled the scores. After even exchanges in the third set Dymond again asserted himself, and supporting his driving with splendid volleying and smashing, took the set, 6-3.

Too Many Errors Against the accurate and persistent, B. A. Barrer, W. R. Robinson (Canterbury), who has had little practice lately, was able to score only four games. Robinson made mistakes in trying to force the pace from the back line or from the net, and Barrer picked the openings for his drive with great judgment. Canterbury evened the match score when T. W. Patterson, who has been seen in too little match play in the last year, decisively beat R. A. Young. In doing so he showed that he has lost little of his accuracy and none of his activity. Young served too many double faults and made many mistakes in his ground strokes. Barnett and Barrer caused an upset by beating Rhodes-Williams and Dymond, 9-7, 7-5. after being down 2-5 in each set. The tennis was not of a very high standard, but was marked by brilliant recoveries by both Barrer and Barnett. University's second doubles pair, Cant and Young, after a shaky start, were too aggressive for Patterson and Robinson, who mad*! many errors. The Scores The scores were as follows, University names being mentioned first: STNGLKS H. A. Barnett beat T. Rhodes-Williams 6-1, 6-4. A. K. Cant lost to H. Dymond, li-6, 6-3, B. A. Barrer beat \V.
