COURTENAY SHOW

—♦— - GOOD DISPLAY OF HORSES The annual show of the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday in ideal weather conditions. .There was a good attendance of district farmers, although the "gate" was scarcely up to that of the preceding year. Entries were also slightly lower than at last show, two consistent exhibitors for a number of years being absent from the draught horse section, and one from the produce section. However, competition in the horse sections was satisfactory, although some of the sheep and cattle classes did not fill as well as could be hoped. This was particularly the case in some of the purebred sections. On the other hand there was good competition in the flock section of sheep and fat lambs and in the dairy classes of cattle. The show, with Mr C. G. Jarman as president, and Mr R. W. McMeekan as secretary, was well conducted and the judging was got through expeditiously. In respect-of quality the show was much more notable than in the matter of numbers, and the parade of stock was an exceptionally good one. Sheep There was practically no competition in the two Leicester and Romney Marsh breeds. Wilfrid Adams, in Border Leicesters, Jas. Reid, in English Leicesters, and A. W. Adams in Romneys, taking, with one minor exception, all the awards. A similar position obtained in Corriedales and Shropshires, Jas. Reid and A. W. Adams respectively monopolising the tickets. In Southdowns, however, there was competition and a good showing, A. W. Adams taking all the senior awards in the classes in which he competed. In the flock sheep section C. O. Redfem won most of the principal tickets. Although there was a very small representation of fat sheep the lambs made a good display, the district being noted for its earliness in fat lamb production. Beef Shorthorns drew no entries, and in the milking section of Shorthorns and Ayrshires the competition was very small. A few quality animals were shown in the Jersey and Friesian classes, and the dairy section was a good one. The champion cow was shown by Butcher Bros, in a class of seven.

Horses Horses are always the strong section at the Courtenay Show, both draught and light. This year there was no exception in the quality, but numbers were somewhat reduced. The absence of Messrs Cogan Bros, and Clinton Bros, in the working draughts classes affected the display in that section. The principle of three judges was adopted, one judge being a junior. It is doubtful if the system is an improvement on that of the single judge. When draught horse men come to a decision on the merits or demerits of a horse there is nothing half-hearted about it, and on Saturday one of the classes was a long time in the ring before the red ticket was finally allotted The two-year and yearling Ally classes were particularly good, as also were the teams of working draughts shown by M. E. Jenkins. In the two-year class E. J. Chatterton was the winner, and in the yearling H. H. Reed, the former class having seven entries and the latter nine. Both championships fell to M. E. Jenkins, the stallion ribbon with Ochtertyre Warrior, and the mare with Farmers' Queen, both of which took the champion ribbons last year. Hackneys provided small rings in most cases, the exception being the 14.2 cob class. The champion hack was J. H. Selby's Gulielmus. This exhibitor and G. Maginness were the most successful exhibitors in the section.

Ponies made an outstanding display. Most of the classes provided good competition, ar\d a number of ponies which competed at the metropolitan show were to the fore. The 13 to 14 hands class, of seven entries, produced the champion—J. S. Lilley's Fireflight Hunters included a few that took their fences well, the best being .1. H. Selby's Gulielmus and N. Hadfleld's Hotch, the latter a clever pony. Harness horses and ponies brought some excellent quality rings forward, and there was some fair competition in the pony classes. J. S. Berry, with Stanley T. took the two of the senior awards in the horses, and G. Maginness, with Tittle Tattle and Scandal in the ponies. The champion harness pony was C. G. Jarman's Humbug, who performed well at the Christchurch Show.

Poultry, farm produce, and other subsidiary sections all created good competition.
