BRITISH SAILORS' SOCIETY
LADIES' GUILD Mrs H. T. J. Thacker presided at the 1 <nthly committee meeting of f•? Christchurch Ladies' Guild of the British Sailors* Society. Others present were Lady Acland, Mesdames J. S. Thomson, S. R. Webb, Heathcote Gray, G. W. C. Smithson, S. L. Partridge, H. L. Bowker, W. F. Tait, John Grigg, H. R. Hamilton, H. i A. Bishop, and Miss M. C Fryer. I Mrs Thomson reported that she had visited three seamen patients in hospital during the last month. It was decided to ask the members to provide the usual ditty bags for Christmas distribution at the institute. The treasurer's report, given by Mrs Smithson, showed that the financial position was not very satisfactory, but a cheque received that day from a kind well-wisher would enable the committee to make its payments for the year, and would greatly benefit the society and the institute. It had been found necessarv to postpone the tennis tournament till early next year. An interesting letter was read from Mr R. A. Dearsley, formerly of Christchurch, who this year is superintendent of the new Seamen's Institute, which the British Sailors' Society is erecting at Haifa, Palestine.
